Cingular is the nation’s largest wireless company with over 50 million subscribers. Cingular’s Wireless Data group (now spun off as Velocita Wireless) is the recognized industry leader in providing wireless data communication solutions for companies and mobile users. It operates its wireless data service throughout the United States, covering more than 93 percent of the urban business population located in 492 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) and non-MSAs with a total population of 200 million people.

GWSM
EBD developed Cingular’s Generic Wirless Subscriber Management (GWSM) system to create a comprehensive account activation and management system for mobile devices supported by Cingular’s Mobitex network. GWSM system was a breakthrough technology first introduced with the Palm PDA. The system has since been implemented for a variety of other devices including RIM BlackBerry, AOL, and Good Technology’s GoodLink.

A key feature of the GWSM system is its over-the-air service activation capability. After purchasing a device, customers can activate the device simply by powering on the system and entering their payment information. They are not required to make phone calls to a call center. Total time to activate a unit is less than 2 minutes, including time for filling in the user information. After activation, the users perform on-going account management via a self-service web site that provides features for:

  • Invoice lookup
  • Account statement
  • Trouble tickets
  • Service level changes, etc.

Upon launch, GWSM was hailed as the Gold Standard for account activation and management by various industry magazines. GWSM’s “over-the-air” activation and other self-service features dramatically lower costs for the telecom operator and improve customer experience.

To develop the above functionality, EBD had to integrate GWSM with several internal systems at Cingular. These included the ERP systems (Oracle, Peoplesoft, Siebel), billing systems (for payment information), Network layer (for communicating with the device), inventory systems (for device specific data), and customer service database (for ongoing customer information).
